Born in Paris, Michaël Cailloux has established himself as a polymorphic artist, exploring the realms of drawing and engraving with a unique approach. His work, described as "Modern Baroque" by Télérama, masterfully combines naturalism and imagination. Inspired by 17th-century still lifes and the Art Nouveau movement, he creates a lush universe where every detail teems with life and color. His work, always grounded in meticulous fine-marker drawings, bears the indelible mark of a unique signature: the fly, a symbol of both life and death, that traverses his creations like a reminiscence of the vanities of the past.
From a young age, Michaël Cailloux developed an insatiable passion for drawing. He filled margins and notebooks, capturing the world with a gaze that was already precise and poetic. In 1998, he graduated from The Duperré School in Paris with a thesis dedicated to the fly in 18th-century art, grounding his work in a timeless and scholarly aesthetic. In 1999, he co-founded Atelier LZC, an innovative design studio that collaborated for a decade with prestigious brands such as Baccarat, Cartier, Habitat, Van Cleef & Arpels, and S.T. Dupont. These years of creative fervor nourished his style, where graphic rigor and a love for decoration intertwine.
In 2009, Michaël Cailloux spread his wings and devoted himself to his unique universe. Fascinated by ancient techniques, he began learning etching and created the " wall jewelry," copper sculptures accompanied by prints, where fauna and flora intertwine in a subtle play of colors and shapes. His iconic fly, reinterpreted in endless variations, becomes a visual metaphor, a red thread that runs through his work.
Since 2013, his work has been presented in collective exhibitions. The year 2015 marked a key moment in his career with his first solo exhibition, In the Shadow of the Eiffel Tower, organized by the Nathalie Béreau Gallery. Held in a historic Parisian townhouse, this exhibition revealed a universe rich in symbolism, showcasing his ex-votos and his precise mastery of the techniques of etching and drypoint.
Two other solo exhibitions followed in Tokyo with the Galerie Irène : Cadavre exquis (2018), where he explores the question of the coexistence of opposites through a modular sculpture inspired by the surrealist game, and Vents Nouveaux (2019), the result of a collaboration with the traditional fan workshop Ibasen. His work resonates particularly with the Japanese audience, who appreciates the intricacy of his art and its echoes of local traditions such as Ukiyo-e.
In 2019, Michaël Cailloux created the image for the event Rendez-vous aux jardins for the Ministry of Culture. Under the theme Animals in the Garden, this event invites reflection on the relationship between humans and their environment, as well as with biodiversity.
In 2021, he presented Luxuriance, an immersive retrospective at the Crochetan Gallery in Switzerland, under the supervision of Julia Hountou. In this exhibition, he integrates randomness through his Renaissances, engravings enhanced with felt pen, testifying to his constant artistic evolution.
In 2022, he unveiled Merveilleuses Rêveries at the Jean-Jacques Rousseau Museum, a tribute to the shared love of nature with the philosopher. Inspired by Rousseau's herbarium, his contemporary works reinterpret the tradition of herbariums while highlighting the fragility of biodiversity.
Renowned international brands call upon the artist for his spirit of innovation and finesse, bringing exclusive collections to life.
In 2016, he designed the iconic symbols of Christian Dior (lily of the valley, clover, rose, butterfly, bee) for a series of greeting cards and art stationery.
In collaboration with Shiseido, he created the cosmetics collection The Garden of Splendors in 2021, blending etching and marker drawing to give birth to a universe where textures and colors are revealed in an unprecedented dimension.
Michaël Cailloux adds a touch of magic to the holiday season through collaborations of great elegance. In 2019, he reinvented the Christmas Yule log and the galette des rois alongside pastry chef Guy Krenzer for Lenôtre. This collaboration continued in 2023, where he transports us au Pays de la Gourmandise with a poetic creation. For l'Evian Resort, he paid tribute to L'Oiseau de Feu by Igor Stravinsky through drawings infused with the unique poetry of the place. In 2024, he imagined Royal Peacock for the Waldorf Astoria – Trianon Palace, a series of three representations of the peacock, a symbol of timeless beauty.
Michaël Cailloux's collaborations reveal their full richness when they offer him the opportunity to explore exceptional materials and ancestral craftsmanship. For Bernardaud, he imagined Féerie (2020), a porcelain service adorned with delicate patterns and shimmering gold effects, the result of extensive technical research. With the Émaux de Longwy, a historic company founded in 1798, he introduced an unprecedented yellow enamel in the Lemon Insect collection and created Pince-Moi, a complex cloisonné piece representing an anthropomorphized lobster, transposing an etching with remarkable precision. In 2024, for Baccarat, he adapted his copper etching expertise to crystal with the Zodiac collection, reflecting his poetic aesthetic and talent for boldly reinventing craftsmanship.
In 2016, during a private viewing in Paris, Michaël Cailloux was noticed by Thierry Magnier, a visionary publisher, who immediately discerned the narrative potential of his rich and abundant universe. This meeting marked the beginning of their collaboration with Wonderful Nature (2017), an album celebrating the cycle of the seasons through meticulous illustrations supported by narrative. In 2023, the editions Delachaux and Niestlé ask the artist to commemorate the centenary of Bambi, Felix Salten's masterpiece published in 1923. Michaël Cailloux revisits this novel with its profound message through lush and vibrant illustrations, magnifying the poetry and gravity of this timeless work while evoking the beauty and fragility of life. These themes are echoed in the exhibition Childhood Regained (Galerie Nathalie Béreau, 2023) and reinvent themselves in The Whispers of the Forest, presented at the Crochetan Gallery in Switzerland (March 2024) in collaboration with Julia Hountou et Frédérique Morrel.
In 2024, Michaël Cailloux teamed up with Marie Desplechin for Le Ventre de Joseph. This book combines his finely detailed drawings, inspired by medieval illuminations and botanical plates, with a baroque and poetic writing style, creating a work with a truly unique atmosphere.
In his works, the artist explores the fragile beauty of living things by addressing universal themes, including life, death, and metamorphosis. His exhibitions, such as Le Pouvoir des Fleurs, currently on display at Les Dominicaines, reflect his ongoing quest for harmony between nature and human emotion.
A universe featured in numerous French and international publications, as well as in the first monograph dedicated to the artist’s work: Luxuriante Nature.
